Moving from a 3-bedroom House to a 1-bedroom Apartment, Part 1

I can’t wait to get rid of all the shit we’ve collected in this huge house over the past 2 years and scale down to a tiny place. Just the basics, just what we need.
Thinking about minimalism yesterday, I wondered— why don’t they call it maximalism. Because what you’re doing by minimizing the distractions in your life is maximizing the space in your mind for conscious thought. Or no thought at all.
Now that we are two weeks away from the move, my number one priority is to prepare. Since this doesn’t leave much time for content creation, my content creation will consist of documenting the preparations. I intend those documents to be a resource for anyone looking to scale down to a much smaller living space. I’m looking forward to the process, it’s exciting!
This post is a summary of my progress so far. From here forward, I plan to document every single thing we do, whether someone takes something from the free sale box or we clean something or give something away. Up to this point, I have documented most things, but this post will catch me, and you, up on the things that I did not document thus far.
Craigslist Sales
This is my first time really selling a lot on craigslist. I’ve bought a handful of times, but never sold. I’m loving it. All of my transactions have gone fabulously! I visualized a smooth craigslist experience, and my first transaction was randomly with a dude who lived 2 houses down from me! Or not so randomly. Thanks Universe!
Listing Books on half.com
Jessica listed a bunch of books on half.com, but we’ve only gotten one sale so far. It wasn’t even worth it because it was some Malcolm Gladwell book only worth $1. Ha! We put that shit in our Free Sale box! We have a new plan for the books to sell them at either Book People or Half-Price Books. Looking forward to getting some mad cash on that! Thanks Universe!
Recycling / Garbage
Can you believe, when we moved into this house, we actually had the intention to fill it and the yard with junk?! What the hell were we thinking? Our perceptions have definitely changed, but we had piles of recyclable containers on our porch and in our shed that we were hanging on to for some unknown reason. We always thought we would find a purpose for them. In two years, we never did.
Last night, I took all that shit to the curb! Piles and piles of recycling, gone! I was slightly nervous that waste management wouldn’t take it all, but they totally did. I feel a huge weight lifted after getting rid of all that crap. I also feel like significant progress has been made towards slimming down after dealing with much of the porch and shed bullshit. Thanks Universe!
Sold Camera
We bought an HD camera when we were in our whole greenscreen studio phase. That didn’t last long. We had this Canon HV30 sitting on a shelf not being used, so we sold it to our friend who is a video jockey. And that earned us our first months rent! I’ve been visualizing our rent being paid for, and what do you know, now it is. Thanks Universe!
Closet
This was the first thing we did. We got rid of about four garbage bags full of clothing, I think. Well, actually got rid of two— the two we donated. One of the others is in the trunk of the car supposedly en route to buffalo exchange. The other has been downgraded from BE status to shit Jessica is possible going to use for her pocket belt. I told her if she doesn’t make it before we move, those clothes have to go. She agreed.
I still feel like I could get rid of more clothing. I want to go back through one mo’ ‘gin before we move and pare it down more. We also have a bunch of bags, belts, and shoes to go through and get rid of. I hope to go down to just my vibrams, a pair of regular running sneaks, my black boots, and flip flops. I think this is fair. When we move, we will each only have a handful of clothing items. Thanks Universe!
Moving Help
I’m so grateful to John Mullen for volunteering to help us with the move! Jessica’s dad is driving in from Burnet the day of, with Uhaul in tow, to help us move all of our stuff in one trip. Since we won’t have much stuff, the packing and unpacking will be a breeze. Thanks Universe!
