two more banners for SAP

brief: two more banners for SAP, again not using their branding nomenclature or logo at all. i was asked to make them stylistically different from the set I did yesterday, as Spiceworks is trying out some different things to see what works. it was noted that some that i designed with hand-drawn elements were performing well, so i chose to again use illustrations. i originally chose the hand-drawn elements because they were so drastically different from the very slick, clean corporate feel of the SAP brand.

series of banners advertising multiple whitepapers on SaaS

client: SAP

brief: users are not responding well to the SAP branded banners, so we are attempting to give them a completely different look and feel so the users can see how SAP can really help SMBs. SAP is seen by the users as serving huge, multinational companies, not SMBs.

Rackspace 3×2 banners, microsite, and vendor page

brief: Create 2 3x2 banners, resource center microsite, and vendor page promoting Rackspace's managed hosting.

one banner highlights four types of managed hosting, other banner is to click to start a live chat.

role: design, development
time: all comps, revisions, and development 28.5 hours

notes:

_this request came in friday 12.18.09. i gave him the first round of comps the following monday morning, 12.21. all comps were finished by 12.23. development began 1.4 and finished 1.5.
_feedback on the first microsite comp was that it looked too much like an ad.
_feedback on the first managed hosting banner was that it wasn't clear that the user can click any of the four options, just looked like static banner

_feedback from Rackspace(see attachment): “That’s the best mashup of our website content I’ve seen”

*attached .zips are html and images so you can click through the microsites and banners

simple tricks 2 make your business card sing

my friend ian asked my advice on his business cards, and i thought the information i gave him could also be helpful to others designing their own cards.

by giving a little extra attention to the type, you can make your card more readable and professional.

below is the email i wrote ian in response to his questions

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

the most important thing to consider is variation in spacing and weight of the type. i think the reason you're not feeling it 'sing' is because the type in the information block is blending together, making it hard to read.

your name and title are one chunk of information, so i separated those with color and spacing. gave some spit shine to your title, but not so much that it outweighs your name. Your name is 11pt Helvetica Neue Roman and the title is 9pt Helvetica Neue Light Italic.

The contact info is 9pt Helvetica Neue Light (so, the same size as the title, but not italicized). you want to be tender with the type, don't try to do too much all at once. you don't want too much variation to the point that your eye is bouncing all around the page. you want to allow the eye to process the information by doing the least amount of work possible.

the space separating SenseArray and your name is exactly double the space separating your name and title with your contact information. SenseArray is 18pt Helvetica Neue Light.

In the second version, i would shrink SenseArray and the brain and move the info block to the left. with it aligned right it creates a weird trapped space on the left. people will feel more comfortable with their eye trailing of the right of the page than with it being trapped on the left. Sense Array is 18pt Thin in this version.

also in the second version i've given a little more hierarchy to the contact info by putting what i deemed the most important information on top and making it slightly heavier (9pt Roman) than the rest. this mimics the styling above and gives the eye a place to rest on this block of information instead of trying to process it all at once.

i think just a few simple changes and they'll be great. feel free to ask if you have anymore questions. hope this helps!

would you mind if i publish these? i think it could be a informative exercise for others as well.
